For Users of Chat Watch 4
Thank you for upgrading to Chat Watch 5! We have taken all your
suggestions and feature requests and made the best Chat Watch yet! While
Chat Watch 5 works almost the same as Chat Watch 4 we have outlined the
key differences below. If you are familiar with Chat Watch 4 then you
won't have any problems at all using Chat Watch 5.
Key Differences Between Chat Watch 4 and Chat Watch 5
- New User Interface - We have made some modifications to the user
interface to make it easier to use. The chat logs are still shown in
the same location. Below the instant messengers on the main screen
you will find a Browse by Date section and a Chat Watch.NET section
to facilitate fast access to the chat logs and your Chat Watch.NET
account.
- Instant Message Logging Plugins -
Chat Watch 5 uses plugins to log the instant messages. This allows
you to quickly add support for logging new and updated instant
messengers without having to install a new version of Chat Watch.
- Hot Key - The hot key in Chat Watch 5 is not required to use
Chat Watch. See the Hot Key Access section for more about the hot
key.
- About Tasks - Tasks have replaced the automated chat e-mailing and
chat uploading. In Chat Watch 4, the automatic e-mail and chat
uploading could only be configured to run at most once a day. With
Tasks in Chat Watch 5 you can have multiple schedules for each day,
week, and month. Also, Chat Watch 5 does not need to be running when
a task is scheduled to be run - unlike Chat Watch 4.
- Stealth Mode - In Chat Watch 4 you had to select the Stealth
Mode option to make Chat Watch 4 run in the background. In Chat
Watch 5 this is not necessary. We redesigned Chat Watch 5 so that it
always logs chats in the background without any visible windows. For
more information on this change please read "What Happened to
Stealth Mode?"
- Google Talk - The ability to log Google Talk was one of the most
requested features. Chat Watch 5 now logs Google Talk instant
messages with the plugin for Google Talk.
- Chat Searching - Chat logs can now be searched by clicking on
Search from the Chats menu. You can search the chat logs by date,
instant messenger, user, or content.
Other Differences
- Authentication Methods - In Chat Watch 4 you had to pick a
password that would provide access to Chat Watch. In Chat Watch 5
you have several additional options to chose from instead of a
password. See the Security page for information on each
authentication method.
- Checking for Updates - You can now check for updates by clicking
Check for Updates from the Help menu. If an update is found you will
be given the option to view what has changed in the update and
download and install it.
- Event Log - Chat Watch 5 keeps a log of all its activities and
errors in its Event Log.
